One of the founding concepts of systemic family therapy has been that children who become entangled in conflicts between parents/carers can have profoundly negative emotional, psychological and social outcomes. The context of severe conflict can take an extreme form where, following separation of their parents, children are not only drawn in to take sides but are actively encouraged to reject and abandon contact with the other parent. Over time the conflict between the parents becomes like an ‘addiction to the battle’ where winning becomes the main focus and the children’s needs become invisible. Alongside this, the conflict can spread to extended family, for example limiting the children’s contact with grandparents and others.
